Tenders for 220Bn TK, Dhaka metro in January 2015

Transport Minister Obaidul Quader announced that the tenders will be invited in January for work on Dhaka Metro Line 6, and the contacts can be signed to get the construction started by 2016.

The first phase is expected to be operational by December 2019. Mohammad Mofazzal Hossain, Project Director – Metrorail confirmed, that the detailed design of the first line is expected to be finalised by July 2016.

Out of the 220bn taka worth total cost for the line 6, 166bn taka will be funded by Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA – Agency which is funding; Mumbai metro projects as well) and the rest 54bn taka will be provided by the government.

The 20·1 km long elevated metro route will run through Uttara to Bangabandhu National Stadium and Bangladesh Bank, connecting 16 stations. A fleet of 56 trains with a capacity to carry, 1800 passengers.It has a total capacity of carrying 60 000 passengers/h in each direction with a frequency of 4 minutes a train. Total 20.1 km stretch will be covered in less than 40 minutes.

 No design contract has been signed so far. The total eight contract packages which will be divided in into two for building and equipping the depot, four for construction of the line and stations, and two for supply of the mechanical and electrical systems and the rolling stock.

Planning of a 36 km Line 7 which will connect Purbachal, Badda, Kamalapur and Narayanganj is already underway.
