The government has proposed a major hike in funds to provide better sanitation facilities under its ambitious “Clean India Mission” by constructing toilets. Schools and anganwadis too are included.
Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation, clarified that toilet construction program will not be a part of MNREGA, as the scheme introduced by the earlier government was not so effective in reality.
He proposes an increase in the budget to construct individual toilets from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 with more emphasis on increase in spend from Rs 35,000 to Rs 54,000 for school sanitation, anganwadi toilets from Rs 8000 to Rs 20,000 and for building community toilets, from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 6 lakhs,
He was observed addressing an audience at exihibition-cum-workshop on Innovation Technology For Sanitation and Water Quality in Rural Areas.
The proposal is ready based on the suggestions given by Rural Development ministry of states and will be proposed to the Cabinet,” the Minister later informed.
