Kochi is all set to become a ‘Solar City’ under the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s much delayed initiative. ICLEI – International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives has prepared the detailed project report, (DPR) after almost one year’s delay. The core committee and the stakeholders committee will draft an action plan as soon as the DPR is submitted.
ICLEI – International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives, the agency which supports local authorities to identify energy management solutions, preparation of the DPR once a comprehensive survey on energy consumption pattern of commercial, industrial and residential units in the city is done.
This energy conservation project is expected to cut down the monthly power bill by almost 60 per cent. KSEB’s bill only for streetlights is about Rs.1.12 cr a month.
Total 55 cities were selected under the scheme the UPA – II govt., The ministry has sanctioned Rs.21 crore have been sanctioned for various cities so far.
